Terms of Service

1. About these terms

These terms apply to your use of SmartHandouts at smarthandouts.com (the “Service”). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.

2. Your account

• You must be at least 18 years old to create an account. The Service is designed for teachers, tutors and other educators.
• You sign in with your Google account and are responsible for keeping that account secure.
• You are responsible for what happens under your account, including lessons you share with students using a link or PIN.
• Each account is for one person. Please don't share your login with others.

3. Free accounts and limits

If you sign up during early access, your account stays free. Free accounts have limits, such as the number of saved lessons and the amount of AI generation you can use. We may change these limits to keep the Service running fairly for everyone, and we will tell you in advance about changes that affect your saved work. If we introduce paid plans in the future, we will not charge you without your clear agreement.

4. Your content

You keep ownership of the material you write or upload, such as your instructions, notes, images and textbook pages (“Your Content”). You give us permission to store, process and display Your Content only as needed to provide the Service to you, including sending it to AI model providers to generate activities.

You must only upload material that you have the right to use. Many schools and publishers allow teachers to use textbook pages for their own classes, but you are responsible for checking that your use is allowed.

Uploaded documents are sent to AI for processing and are not stored on our servers. Images you add to the editor are stored with Amazon Web Services in Frankfurt, Germany, so they can appear in your worksheets. Any image you upload must be legal, appropriate for a classroom, and yours to use, or used with permission or under a licence that allows it. Don't upload images that identify students or other people without their consent. We may remove images that break these terms.

5. Worksheets you make

Subject to these terms, you may use the worksheets, handouts and activities you create with SmartHandouts (“Worksheets”) for individual classroom use. This means you may:

• print and copy Worksheets for the students you teach;
• display Worksheets on a screen in your lessons;
• share Worksheets with your students, including through share links and PINs; and
• adapt and edit Worksheets for your own teaching.

You may not:

• sell, resell, license or charge for Worksheets, including on teacher resource marketplaces;
• publish or distribute Worksheets as a collection, product or resource pack for others to use; or
• use the Service to produce material at scale for commercial publishing.

Sharing a Worksheet informally with a colleague for their own classroom use is fine. If you would like to use SmartHandouts for commercial or school-wide publishing, contact us first.

6. AI-generated content

SmartHandouts uses AI to help write activities. AI output can be inaccurate, incomplete or unsuitable for a particular class, and similar requests may produce similar results for different users. You are responsible for reviewing Worksheets before using them with students and for deciding whether they are appropriate for your class, curriculum and school policies.

7. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• use the Service for anything unlawful, harmful, hateful, sexually explicit or otherwise inappropriate for a classroom;
• upload material that infringes someone else's copyright or other rights;
• enter anything other than educational content and lesson ideas into the AI, including personal information about students or anyone else, such as names, grades or special educational needs details;
• try to get around usage limits, for example by creating multiple accounts or abusing the invite-a-teacher allowance;
• scrape, copy or resell the Service, its templates or design, or access it through automated means; or
• interfere with the security or operation of the Service.

8. Our intellectual property

The Service, including its software, templates, layouts, design and branding, belongs to SmartHandouts. These terms don't give you any rights in it beyond using the Service and your Worksheets as described above.

9. Suspension and termination

You can stop using SmartHandouts at any time and ask us to delete your account by emailing support@smarthandouts.com. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms or put the Service or other users at risk. Where reasonable, we will warn you first and give you a chance to save your work. Sections 5 to 8 and 10 to 12 continue to apply after your account is closed.

10. Disclaimer

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent permitted by law, we make no warranties that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that Worksheets will be accurate or suitable for any particular purpose. Please keep your own copies of anything important.

11. Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, SmartHandouts will not be liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss, or for loss of data, arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you have paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including your rights as a consumer.

12. Changes to the Service and these terms

We are continually improving SmartHandouts and may add, change or remove features. We may also update these terms. If we make significant changes, we will update the date at the top of this page and let you know by email or in the Service before they take effect. If you keep using the Service after that, the updated terms will apply.
